Brutalist, Modernist, Art Deco or 20th Century – remix of architecture pieces to form new urban environments + fantastical buildings.

MULTICITY

Skyscrapers from different cities are combined to form a new downtown. This includes the famous cup and saucers from Disneyland. The city appears to be floating in space.

MODERNIST CITY

A busy city scene, made up of mostly Modernist buildings from around the world. The bridge piece was an absolute fluke as it worked both in scale and style to perfectly line up with the main street in the distance. Sunken gardens, roads and trains complete the scene.

downtown circuit

A floating utopia in the clouds, this futuristic city scene is dominated by three towers, one of which is a huge quartz crystal. A network of motorways and bridges connect the viewer over the golden water to the metropolis.

golden path

An aeroplane chase, running high and parallel to the golden streets of the metropolis below. On the horizon, and oversized cluster of buildings dominate the skyline.

COME DOWN FROM THERE AT ONCE!

Adventurous children are sitting high up on the edge of a building in a city full of skyscrapers. A boy is waving down to the photographer who captures the monochrome scene.

THE STATUE OF APOLLO THE HORSE

A mother and child are climbing the steps to get a closer look as the huge statue of Apollo the horse. Surrounded by the curves of the Modernist building, it makes for a dramatic and over-sized scene.

BRUTAL CITY

Using various pieces of Brutalist architecture, a busy complex is imagined, complete with vibrant aqua waterway replacing streets, and gondolas replacing cars. A man is sitting under the lamp, is he hiding from someone?

MOTORWAY TO THE POOLS

sydney in the year 2098

Sydney in the year 2098 is imagined as a bustling, self-sufficient green city, with supertall skyscrapers over 1000 metres tall. The Opera House is reinterpreted as a busy transport hub. But global warming has caused the harbour to rescind and reveal deep cavernous cliffs, while beyond the city, the outskirts has become desert, with sweltering temperatures in the 50s.

flights suspended

Created when the world was on lockdown, and all airlines and flights were suspended indefinitely. Here the aeroplane is literally suspended to the dock, hovering for boarding passengers, sky replacing sea...

cliffhanger

Named not just for the fictional Art Deco city that is perilously perched high on the mountain top among the clouds, but also for the anticipated drama at the end of a TV series: in this case a woman is left hanging on to a ledge, while a powerful waterfall crashes to the bottom below her.

crystal rock lodge

Set below a dramatic cliff and waterfall, sits an architectural lodge on grassy flat ground. Crystal rocks stand like strange trees, with the largest being accessible via steps to go inside.

kiss on deck

Created early in Gorst's career, circa mid-90s. This piece resembles and oversized eye, complete with eyelashes courtesy of the spiky buildings. The retro couple kiss on the deck of the building.

sirius paint drip

Created specially for This Is Sirius exhibition, to raise awareness and to save the Sydney building from destruction. It was saved, but the building is undergoing a transformation so will appear differently when completed.
